Good to know

Practical info & fares

Money: crowns, not euros

  • The currency is the Czech crown (CZK, Kč); euros are taken only in some tourist shops, at a poor rate
  • Never change money on the street, and beware of "0 % commission" boards: check the rate you actually get on the receipt
  • By law you can cancel an exchange within 3 hours at the same office (up to EUR 1,000); keep the receipt
  • At ATMs and card terminals choose to pay in CZK, not in your own currency (the conversion offered is expensive)

Cards and contactless

  • Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, also for small amounts and in pubs
  • Trams and buses have a contactless ticket terminal on board (middle door in trams); the PID Lítačka app is the cheapest way to buy tickets
  • Keep a little cash for market stalls, toilets and small kiosks

Pubs, bills and tipping

  • Lunch is about 11:30–14:00 (many pubs have a cheap weekday "denní menu"), dinner 18:00–21:00
  • Bread, appetisers or nuts put on the table may be charged: send them back if you do not want them; a full glass is often replaced without asking
  • Check the bill for a service charge; if there is none, about 10 % is usual for good service, rounded up when you pay
  • Beer comes in 0.5 l or 0.3 l; the legal drinking age is 18 and smoking is banned inside bars and restaurants

Pickpockets and scams

  • Watch your bag on Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, around the Astronomical Clock and on tram 22
  • Book shows and concerts on the venue's own site or box office, not from street sellers
  • Use a taxi app with a price shown in advance; do not take a taxi waiting at a tourist spot

Trams, metro and tickets

  • A paper ticket is stamped once, on the first trip, in the yellow validator; a ticket stamped twice is invalid
  • An app ticket is valid 60 seconds after activation: activate it before you board
  • Children under 15 and over-65s ride free with an ID showing the date of birth; a 24 h (CZK 140 in the app) or 72 h ticket (CZK 340) suits most visitors
  • Inspectors are in plain clothes; the fine is CZK 1,200 on the spot

Shops on Sundays and holidays

  • Shops are open on Sundays in Prague, often with shorter hours
  • Shops over 200 m² must close on 1 Jan, Easter Monday, 8 May, 28 Sept, 28 Oct, 25 and 26 Dec, and on 24 Dec from 12:00; small shops, stations and the airport may open
  • Many museums and sights close on Mondays (the Jewish Museum on Saturdays): check before you go

Water, weather and shoes

  • Tap water is safe to drink; restaurants usually serve bottled water, ask for "kohoutková voda"
  • Autumn days are about 5–15 °C and winter often below zero; bring layers
  • Cobblestones and hills (castle, Petřín, Vyšehrad): comfortable shoes help

Day trips

  • Kutná Hora (bone church, St Barbara) and Karlštejn Castle are easy day trips by train from Prague Main Station
  • They are not in the planner: keep a separate day for them
